Oerba, Gran Pulse, Wednesday
Rather than remain in New Bodhum for the day, though they would return there for the night, Caius teleported them all to the ruins of a village. The buildings were made of metal (heavily rusted) and wood, which had held up surprisingly well under the ravages of time. Inside the buildings, personal things could be found: combs left on dressers, a few ancient photographs, and neatly folded blankets forgotten on the ends of beds.
A wide road cut through the village and a broad staircase led down to a murky beach. On top of one of the buildings, an overgrown fountain and the remnants of a garden could be found.
Powered crystal, which looked like snow from far away, and like sand close up, choked the side streets and surrounded the village.
"Welcome," Yeul said softly, "to Oerba."
[NFB and for them that have been invited. The theme songs for Oerba are: Dust to Dust and Ruined Hometown.]

Re: Daytime -- Arrival
"The war that left this area inhospitable to human life is known as the War of Transgression," Yeul said, studying Cocoon and the water. "Vanille and Fang originally fought in it as god-gifted warriors. God-gifted is... a painful thing. The fal'Cie, gods, though different from the ones of myth, brand their chosen with a mark and a task. As time ticks down, the mark changes. All tasks the fal'Cie give have deadlines. If a chosen succeeds in their task, they are turned to crystal and sleep in eternal slumber until they are needed for another task. If a chosen fails...," she hesitated, then continued, "they lose their souls."
And become monsters.
"Vanille and Fang failed their task during the war and yet, unusually, were turned to crystal, and time went on without them, their village drying up and growing empty. It was six hundred years of sleep before they woke up, to a world that they barely knew, with the instructions to carry out their task this time. When they saw their home, it was like it was now. Soon after that, they willingly saved Cocoon by turning to crystal again."

Shh! Don't point out that she was being sensitive and/or philosophical. It'll just ruin the moment!

Heh heh. Sounded like Bottom.
"But even there has soldiers and walls and monsters, doesn't it?"
And gods lurking to turn people into paperweights?
