Oerba, Gran Pulse, Wednesday

Rather than remain in New Bodhum for the day, though they would return there for the night, Caius teleported them all to the ruins of a village. The buildings were made of metal (heavily rusted) and wood, which had held up surprisingly well under the ravages of time. Inside the buildings, personal things could be found: combs left on dressers, a few ancient photographs, and neatly folded blankets forgotten on the ends of beds.

A wide road cut through the village and a broad staircase led down to a murky beach. On top of one of the buildings, an overgrown fountain and the remnants of a garden could be found.

Powered crystal, which looked like snow from far away, and like sand close up, choked the side streets and surrounded the village.

"Welcome," Yeul said softly, "to Oerba."

[NFB and for them that have been invited. The theme songs for Oerba are: Dust to Dust and Ruined Hometown.]

Well... He'd cried a lot?

"I've... tried to distance myself from it," Evan murmured. "I don't want to be anything like it. Not if I can help it."

"How do you expect to grow as a person when you define yourself by something that hurts?" he asked, his voice quiet. "You can't do that. If you do, you'll never have a strong foundation."

"I thought I had a strong foundation," Evan replied quietly. "A family... a home. I knew who I was. None of it was real, though. None of it really mattered, after all."

"That happens sometimes," Caius said. It was hard to say if he sympathized or not. "What foundation do you have left?"

"Shadows and monsters and lies, mostly," Evan shrugged. "Not the sort of foundation that you really want to build on. But it's all I have."

"Then you shouldn't run away from it." That wouldn't help anything, would it?

"If that's all you have, you can't hide from it."

"But I can't embrace it! That's not who I want to be!"

There was a desperate note in that, yes.

"Then don't," Caius said, "but acknowledge it. Admit that it is where you come from, what has made you who you are. Don't run from it."

"And what if it's bigger than I am?"

What if it swallowed him whole?

"Get bigger," Caius said. "Grow. Don't just give up at the starting line."

"And is that something I figure out as I go?"

Because giving up at the starting line seemed pretty tempting, some days.

"Yes."

Caius deliberated for a moment before elaborating.

"You'll falter, and stall, but growth is moving forward anyway, while acknowledging the past."

"I guess I have the rest of my life to figure out how," Evan noted, chewing his lip. "Thank you, Caius."
