Rather than remain in New Bodhum for the day, though they would return there for the night, Caius teleported them all to the ruins of a village. The buildings were made of metal (heavily rusted) and wood, which had held up surprisingly well under the ravages of time. Inside the buildings, personal things could be found: combs left on dressers, a few ancient photographs, and neatly folded blankets forgotten on the ends of beds.

A wide road cut through the village and a broad staircase led down to a murky beach. On top of one of the buildings, an overgrown fountain and the remnants of a garden could be found.

Powered crystal, which looked like snow from far away, and like sand close up, choked the side streets and surrounded the village.

"Welcome," Yeul said softly, "to Oerba."

[NFB and for them that have been invited. The theme songs for Oerba are: Dust to Dust and Ruined Hometown.]

How had she noticed it? Zeela was incredibly subtle about it!

"You wanna explain that?" she asked, shuffling along behind. Her indifferent demeanor was dropping, bit by bit. Yeul might be a nerd like the rest of the group here--except for Caius who was at least good at projecting badass--but she was a pretty fascinating one. "If you don't want to, I'm cool," she added. "I'm mostly interested in poking stuff anyway. But you seemed to wanna talk, so..."

Translation: This seems kinda cool, actually, but I can understand if you'd prefer not to talk about it, what with the living and dying and all.

"We have the Mother," Zeela said, tone sliding into something close to reverent for the first time. "She's our goddess, though, so I assume the one-faces have their own gods. I don't know anything about them, though."

Zeela mulled over this in silence for awhile, running her fingers over the flower petals while she thought. Her sisters crowded close, listening to the story, too.

"Bhunivelze sounds like a real jerk," was what she eventually came up with. "And Yeul--" she gave Yeul a sidelong look, "--looks like Etro looks like Mwynn?"

::Does that make her a goddess, too?:: Sholeh asked. ::Made by one goddess, with the blood of another?::

Zeela shrugged and repeated the question, stressing that it was Sholeh who wanted to know.

Zeela made a face. "Like...literally, her eyes? Plucked 'em out of her face and put them into yours?"

...So not the point, Zeela.

Zeela was reluctant to look. She had a feeling that whatever her answer was, Yeul would see something further into it than she'd intended.

"Not sure," she admitted. "There's the big thing up in the sky that we could see yesterday. It's pretty at night."

"Wouldn't it be a better memorial if it were alive and thriving?" Zeela asked. "Who wants to know their home had turned to dust and rust and decay?"

"So, if most of humanity lived in Cocoon, how come Oerba was here?" Zeela asked, trying to puzzle out the history. "If this is the last thing they remember, there was already a big war here, right?"

"So, you make your gods happy and you get turned to crystal," Zeela said slowly. "You make them mad and you lose your soul. Are your gods at least helpful? Give you more to go on than a vague pronouncement or two?"

Like...written instructions? Maybe a map and a diagram? Pointers?

"Your gods suck," Zeela said, because she was wonderfully tactful like that. "You're set up to fail, the punishment is terrible, and the rewards sucks, too."

"Manage, yeah," Zeela said softly, looking back out onto the ruins again. "But do you thrive?"

Shh! Don't point out that she was being sensitive and/or philosophical. It'll just ruin the moment!

"No, I know better than that," Zeela said, giving herself a shake to shove off the introspective feelings. "I mean, there's New Bodhum, after all."

Heh heh. Sounded like Bottom.

"But even there has soldiers and walls and monsters, doesn't it?"

And gods lurking to turn people into paperweights?

"You can get used to lots of things if you live with 'em long enough," Zeela pointed out. "Monsters, too."
