Rather than remain in New Bodhum for the day, though they would return there for the night, Caius teleported them all to the ruins of a village. The buildings were made of metal (heavily rusted) and wood, which had held up surprisingly well under the ravages of time. Inside the buildings, personal things could be found: combs left on dressers, a few ancient photographs, and neatly folded blankets forgotten on the ends of beds.
A wide road cut through the village and a broad staircase led down to a murky beach. On top of one of the buildings, an overgrown fountain and the remnants of a garden could be found.
Powered crystal, which looked like snow from far away, and like sand close up, choked the side streets and surrounded the village.
"Welcome," Yeul said softly, "to Oerba."
[NFB and for them that have been invited. The theme songs for Oerba are: Dust to Dust and Ruined Hometown.]

Yeul might be a nerd like the rest of the group here--except for Caius who was at least good at projecting badass--but she was a pretty fascinating one. "If you don't want to, I'm cool," she added. "I'm mostly interested in poking stuff anyway. But you seemed to wanna talk, so..."
Translation: This seems kinda cool, actually, but I can understand if you'd prefer not to talk about it, what with the living and dying and all.

Yeul didn't mind talking, though she was still taking them slowly towards the building. She had another comment in mind, that might give Zeela food for thought.
But it would come, in time.

Date: 2013-08-29 02:03 am (UTC)"In the beginning, there was one god, and her name was Mwynn," Yeul said softly but clearly. "Then came her son, Bhunivelze. He became the sole ruler of the living world by defeating his mother and banished her to the world of the dead. But Bhunivelze looked around the universe and thought that the fact that everything had a time and place to die meant his mother had left a curse on everything. He could not reach the realm of the dead to punish her but kept looking for a way. As part of his work to reach the other realm, he created three goddesses, his daughters. The eldest daughter is Pulse, our world. The youngest daughter, Lindzei, aided her elder sister in the creation of the world."
They stepped out onto a flat roof, with an overgrown fountain and flowers growing from planters. The flowers, unlike the rest of the town, were healthy and fresh.
"The middle daughter was named Etro, and she was a mistake." Yeul smiled at Zeela. "Bhunivelze had accidentally created his middle daughter in the image of his mother. Fearing her visage, he gave her no power to create and avoided her." Her smile faded. "Etro was young and did not understand why her father would fear her. Desperate to get his attention, she tried all sorts of things. In the end, she killed herself, in a desperate gambit to catch his eye. It did not work, but in the realm of the dead, Etro met her grandmother, Mwynn, who gave her the task of giving chaos to each human soul in order to balance them with order and preserve the worlds."
Yeul was just going to... keep talking.
"In time, humans called this bit of chaos they each had their 'heart' and it made them stronger." Yeul took a deep breath. "In the living world, Lindzei used Etro's blood and, in her honour, created a human girl that she named Yeul, in Etro's image. Some stories say that Yeul was the first human being born. Others say she came after, so that there were people to look after her."
She didn't remember that far back.

Date: 2013-08-29 02:10 am (UTC)"Bhunivelze sounds like a real jerk," was what she eventually came up with. "And Yeul--" she gave Yeul a sidelong look, "--looks like Etro looks like Mwynn?"
::Does that make her a goddess, too?:: Sholeh asked. ::Made by one goddess, with the blood of another?::
Zeela shrugged and repeated the question, stressing that it was Sholeh who wanted to know.
Re: Daytime -- Arrival
Date: 2013-08-29 02:24 am (UTC)She glanced at Zeela.
"I do not know," she said, with a shrug. "I have never concerned myself with that."
Re: Daytime -- Arrival
Date: 2013-08-29 02:26 am (UTC)...So not the point, Zeela.
Re: Daytime -- Arrival
Date: 2013-08-29 02:29 am (UTC)She stepped towards the edge of the roof, to where Cocoon was clearly visible.
"Zeela," she said, "what do you see?"
Re: Daytime -- Arrival
Date: 2013-08-29 02:42 am (UTC)"Not sure," she admitted. "There's the big thing up in the sky that we could see yesterday. It's pretty at night."
Re: Daytime -- Arrival
Date: 2013-08-29 02:58 am (UTC)Yeul kept her eyes fixed on it.
"Then it began to fall," she continued, "and two people gave their lives and turned to crystal to catch it. Some say they're still alive, just sleeping inside the pillar that supports the old world. If they falter, the world will fall and everyone will die."
And it would fall, eventually.
"The two people who saved the world are named Oerba Dia Vanille and Oerba Yun Fang. They came from here." In case the names hadn't given it away. "No one touches this city because of them. This is their memorial, a reminder of the home they once had."

Date: 2013-08-29 11:34 pm (UTC)"The war that left this area inhospitable to human life is known as the War of Transgression," Yeul said, studying Cocoon and the water. "Vanille and Fang originally fought in it as god-gifted warriors. God-gifted is... a painful thing. The fal'Cie, gods, though different from the ones of myth, brand their chosen with a mark and a task. As time ticks down, the mark changes. All tasks the fal'Cie give have deadlines. If a chosen succeeds in their task, they are turned to crystal and sleep in eternal slumber until they are needed for another task. If a chosen fails...," she hesitated, then continued, "they lose their souls."
And become monsters.
"Vanille and Fang failed their task during the war and yet, unusually, were turned to crystal, and time went on without them, their village drying up and growing empty. It was six hundred years of sleep before they woke up, to a world that they barely knew, with the instructions to carry out their task this time. When they saw their home, it was like it was now. Soon after that, they willingly saved Cocoon by turning to crystal again."

"But even there has soldiers and walls and monsters, doesn't it?"
And gods lurking to turn people into paperweights?
