Rather than remain in New Bodhum for the day, though they would return there for the night, Caius teleported them all to the ruins of a village. The buildings were made of metal (heavily rusted) and wood, which had held up surprisingly well under the ravages of time. Inside the buildings, personal things could be found: combs left on dressers, a few ancient photographs, and neatly folded blankets forgotten on the ends of beds.

A wide road cut through the village and a broad staircase led down to a murky beach. On top of one of the buildings, an overgrown fountain and the remnants of a garden could be found.

Powered crystal, which looked like snow from far away, and like sand close up, choked the side streets and surrounded the village.

"Welcome," Yeul said softly, "to Oerba."

[NFB and for them that have been invited. The theme songs for Oerba are: Dust to Dust and Ruined Hometown.]

Once he'd escorted Yeul and her friends back to the village, Caius had quietly excused himself.

Now, later in the evening, he sat, reading a novel and waiting patiently.

He could have gone outside, but Yeul had wanted to go and her wishes, has always, had taken precedence.

After her talk outside, Sholeh felt better enough to come back in. Not cheerful, by any means, but not as unsettled anymore, either. When she saw Caius sitting with his book, she paused in front of him for a moment, waiting to attract his attention.

It was only after Caius stopped reading and set his book aside that Sholeh spoke up. "I wanted to thank you, sir, for your help with all those things," she said. Loyalty made her say, "Zeela had it covered when it was just the one," while honesty made her add, "though I don't think she would have fared so well against the bunch."

"Yes," he said, smiling slightly, "I know. She did well against the one." He had kept an eye on the fight against the lone Seeker, after all. "And you're quite welcome, Sholeh," he added, since she was so polite.

Caius regarded her quietly for a moment. "Before you turn in for the night," he said finally, "may I please speak to Zeela?"

Uh-oh. That probable meant that Zeela was in trouble. That was usually the only reason an adult asked to talk to Zeela directly.

"Yes, sir," Sholeh said, letting Zeela come into view.

"Mr. Grabby started it." You know, in case he was mad she got into a fight with an arm-thing. Or, more likely, dragged him into a fight with a bunch of them.

Caius didn't bother to respond to that.

"Catch," he said, then waited a second and tossed a cloth wrapped bundle at her.

Inside the bundle, she would find a sheathed dagger (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130703232227/finalfantasy/images/d/dc/Dagger-ffxii.png).

Zeela caught it, brow furrowed until she'd removed the cloth. Then her face cleared into a brilliant smile. "Is this for me?" she asked, sliding the blade out of the sheath to examine it. "While we're here? Can I really? You don't mind?"

Stupid questions all, but no one had ever given Zeela anything as wonderful before.

"It's yours," Caius said, then added, "to keep. Even after you leave here."

He regarded the girl seriously.

"If you're going to fight, you'll want something with an edge."

"Yeah, I do," Zeela breathed, running her thumb lightly over the edge and smiling when a bead of blood appeared. The she thumped the metal and her smile turned into a grin when it sang. "Good metal," she said. "And it's light!"

"It's made for fast movement," Caius said, watching her. "Quick slicing cuts and a wielder who knows how to get in and out of range at speed."

After another moment, he added, "If you wish to practice while you're here," and he could keep a stealthy eye on her, "I suggest outside the fence here. The monsters are not particularly strong in this location."

"Can we?" Zeela asked, refraining from bouncing up and down only because she didn't want Caius to think she didn't deserve the knife. "Like, right now? I could go for some monster hunting before bed!"

"If you will not be too tired tomorrow," he said slowly, "you may."

At least he was winning points with one of the sisters?

Yeeeah, the giving Zeela a knife and then telling her she could go play wasn't exactly endearing himself to the other two. Well, Sholeh was all right, but Zhahar wasn't entirely keen on the whole idea.

Zeela couldn't care less how her sisters felt about it. She had a gorgeous new weapon and she was going to get to practice with it tomorrow! Awesome!

"So...is this cause I fought off that grabby little creep?" she asked. "Not bad for my first time out and about with one of those, enh?"

"You survived," he said simply. "Against a Seeker, with a stick. That is strength that should be nutured, not wasted."

"I'm all about nurturing my talents," Zeela promised, willing to say whatever to agree with Caius. "And tomorrow, I can just sleep while one of my other sisters is in view. We do that all the time. The three of us only need to sleep all together every few days or so. So we'll be fine."

She gave him puppy eyes and a smile. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease could they go now?

It was clearly a trick of the light that made him look amused as he stood and reached for his sword, slinging it over his back.

"Come along," he said, in his quiet voice. "Let's go train."

And Zeela trotted after him like an obedient puppy, grinning like and idiot and determined not to come back until she could barely move.
